Prepare 3-5 Key Points

Before any interview, identify three to five key points you want to communicate. These points should be central to your business and provide value to your audience. Preparing these points helps you stay focused and ensures that your key messages don’t get lost in conversation.

Tell a Relatable Story

People connect with stories. By weaving a relatable story into your interview, you’ll engage your audience on a deeper level. This could be a success story of a client, a challenge you overcame, or the journey of your business. The key is to make it relevant and relatable to your audience.

Use Seeded Language

Seeded language is a method of subtly reinforcing your authority and credibility. It involves inserting specific words or phrases into your conversation that subtly communicate your expertise, achievements, or the unique aspects of your business. For instance, mentioning your experience working with Fortune 500 companies or highlighting your extensive industry experience can subtly affirm your authority.

Be Clear, Not Perfect

Nobody expects you to be perfect, but they do expect clarity. Ensure that your points are communicated clearly and concisely. Trying too hard to be perfect can make you appear robotic or over-rehearsed. Let your authenticity shine through.

Don’t Run On

Being mindful of time is crucial, especially in a live interview. Don’t ramble or get caught up in lengthy explanations. Keep your points concise and direct. If you find yourself running on, take a moment to refocus and return to your key points.

Challenge the Viewer with Questions

Engage your audience by posing thought-provoking questions. This encourages them to think more deeply about what you’re saying and can spur them to action. For example, if you run a carpet cleaning business, you could ask, “When was the last time you had a deep clean of your carpets?”

Media interviews offer a fantastic opportunity to showcase your business and establish yourself as an authority in your field. By implementing these six strategies, you’ll be well-equipped to make the most of your next media appearance, engage your audience effectively, and leave a lasting impression.

Remember, your goal is not just to share information about your business, but to connect with your audience, provide value, and position yourself as a leader in your industry. With these strategies, you’re well on your way to acing your next interview.
